Oh, did I almost forget Halloween? The Walking Dead and American Horror Story. If you haven’t set the DVR, do. The last AHS actually gave me nightmares.

Happy Election Day.

While I set down the Xbox controller (Anyone else taking a shot at Dead Space?), I thought I’d take a second to write about the current MS’s progress.

I’ve gone back to the drawing board just slightly, and am working on the theme for Les Moribund before I try to plow ahead. I have an idea that my past theme was a bit too watered down and needed some tweaking. Fyi, there is a great book on breaking down the subconscious and locating the theme. It’s actually written by my mentor, S.L. Stebel: Double Your Creative Power.

As far as Les Moribund, the main concept of hive mind or solidarity helped me redefine the theme, which takes me to the Word of the Day: Zeitgeist.

From MW online:

zeitgeist
One entry found.

Main Entry:
zeit·geist
Pronunciation:
\ˈtsīt-ˌgīst, ˈzīt-\
Function:
noun
Usage:
often capitalized
Etymology:
German, from Zeit + Geist spirit
Date:
1835
: the general intellectual, moral, and cultural climate of an era

Here is the word’s Wiki.

On a side note, we’ve made good progress on the maps for the book. I’ll post a few versions as we work through them. Now go vote.

In the story, people are suddenly stricken blind. Key words: epidemic, government, quarantine. I’m all for end-of-society stories, so I’m onboard for this flick. The book was first published in Portuguese (1995) and then English (1997) and won the Nobel Prize in 1998.

For more, check out the slick website put up by Miramax. Great open. For the journey to story took from novel to screenplay to screen, the LA Times has an interesting column that came out this week (Joe Penhall, who adapted McCarthy’s The Road, is quoted in the article). The film stars Mark Ruffalo and Julianne Moore (it also opened the 2008 Cannes Film Festival). You can read Guardian (UK) review of the film here. Peter Bradshaw gave the film 4 stars.

I’ll let this one speak for itself. “American Psycho,” the chilling serial killer/yuppie satire by Bret Easton Ellis (back in ‘91 Simon and Schuster passed on the book, picked up by Vintage Books) is now heading for Broadway. No director yet, but producers say they hope the musical will hit the stage by 2010. No music rights yet either, but producers say they’d like to use songs from the Talking Heads, Genesis and Huey Lewis and the News.

If you didn’t know, back when Simon and Schuster passed on the novel in ‘91, it created a fervor in the publishing business. Ellis’s agent said the reason Simon & Schuster’s then parent company, Paramount, cancelled the book was the reaction of a “giant corporation responding to prepublication controversy and strong-arming its publishing division into abandoning its own tradition of fearless publishing.” Simon & Schuster (now Viacom Inc.) said they canceled because the novel — which featured the murders of women, children and animals — was in bad taste. You can read more about the hubbub here.

THR.com says Ellis is now represented by ICM and Media Talent Group.
