SYNOPSIS
The Shin family — Sam, Suzie and their mother and father — are making a trip to their Grandmother’s house for the Christmas holiday. On a mountain pass, the Shins barely survive a car accident to find their only refuge in the snowy wilderness an abandoned resort. Once inside the dilapidated old building, the Shins find four black letters, addressed to each of them, waiting on a serpent pedestal. Then She appears, a wraith of mist and shadow, and the family loses consciousness.
When they awake, they find they are not alone. Within the dusty halls of the Blackwell Resort are seven others: Martha Hannigen, a secretary from Chicago. Newlyweds Kevin and Laura Doyle from California. And Katee and Jacob, ID thieves and grifters, taken in Texas as they fled from the law.
Outside every door, every window, is the void. A blackness that when touched, spreads a dark disease on the skin. The only time the void fades is when the house enters Transition, when She reaches into a ghostly beachfront just outside the door, bringing new victims to the house, to feed.
The Shins soon discover the others are not only from different places, but different times. The Shins, 2003. Martha Hannigen, 1980. The Doyles, 1988. Katee and Jacob, 2007. As the group tries to gain freedom, they turn to the mystery within the Black Letters: One door leads from the house, one door takes you home. Do they roll the bone dice at the attic door? Do they try the locked cellar? Or do they attempt the strange ghostly lakefront during transition? And even then, to what time would they escape?
As they fall, young Sam Shin realizes his faith is the means to their escape. But to utilize this power, the boy must enter the belly of the basement and make the ultimate sacrifice so those still alive can go free.
Who is She? What does She want? Why has She brought them here? Signs that lead to the truth–that the dark wraith has killed for years, pulling victims to the Blackwell Resort, out of space and out of time, keeping the building churning, forever. But to what end?
